The 3 Secrets of Keeping Your Crew Safe in Summer

The 3 Secrets of Keeping Your Crew Safe in Summer

As most construction superintendents know, it’s hard to keep your workers cool in the summer. The heat can cause personal protective equipment to become uncomfortable and itchy as you sweat more. On the first day of summer, Heroica Construction is here to give you the tips you need to keep your crew happy and safe.

1. Make sure that you’re drinking every 15-20 min not just during breaks:

If you’re thirsty in the field, it’s a sign that you’re already dehydrated. Loss of fluids can trigger heat cramps and in severe conditions heat exhaustion. These health risks cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea amongst other nasty symptoms. Therefore, it’s important to keep your body safe by drinking beverages that have electrolytes like fruit juice or Gatorade. When you’re hydrated, you have more energy. As a result, you’re likely to feel more awake and comfortable.

2. Bathrooms:

If your workers drink as much water as they should, it’s crucial that they have access to bathrooms. It’s essential your crew feels able to drink and stay hydrated without worrying about where they’re going to go when they need to go. Furthermore, the time you save when workers are hydrated more than makes up for the time it takes for those brief bathroom breaks.

3. Create a buddy system for heat conditions:

Sadly, on most construction sites there’s a culture of silence. Construction crews can get caught up in their work. In addition, when you’re in the zone it can be hard to admit that you’re uncomfortable. Having someone who checks in with you regularly increases your willingness to admit that you’re dehydrated and take action into your own hands! You can make the work day easier on your crews by starting earlier to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Finally, make sure your worksite designated shady or cool spaces for breaks. At Heroica we’re devoted to our crews’ well-being. To learn more about Heroica and our safety practices visit us at our website here!
